Abbie & Josh’s Lion Enclosure Celebration
When Abbie and Josh chose Chester Zoo for their wedding, it wasn’t just because it’s one of the most iconic venues in Cheshire, it was because of the zoo’s incredible commitment to conservation and its mission to protect wildlife. With so many childhood memories of visiting Zoo’s, the couple felt a deep connection to the place and loved the idea that their wedding would support the zoo’s vital work.
Their ceremony took place in The Square’s courtyard, a beautiful, intimate space filled with character from it’s previous Lion occupants. What made their day especially unique was choosing to hold their wedding ceremony outdoors something the Chester Zoo team told me most couples don’t do. It turned out to be the perfect decision: the atmosphere was relaxed, the sunshine poured in, and it gave plenty of space for me to photograph candid, natural moments.
Why Chester Zoo Was the Perfect Wedding Venue
Abbie and Josh first met at university and brought all their friends and family up from the south to celebrate in one of their favourite places. They had looked at zoos across the UK in search of the right spot, but Chester Zoo’s conservation work and unique wedding spaces sealed the deal. For Abbie, an animal lover passionate about wildlife and the natural world, Chester Zoo felt like the perfect fit. It wasn’t just a venue; it was a place that aligned with their values and gave them the opportunity to create lasting memories in a meaningful way.
The couple loved the idea of exploring the zoo on their wedding day, and that’s exactly what we did. After their ceremony in the outdoor courtyard at The Square, surrounded by loved ones (and a few curious seagulls making a lot of noise), guests were free to wander the zoo while we slipped away for portraits. This gave Abbie and Josh space to relax and enjoy being together while I captured editorial, natural photographs among the incredible backdrops Chester Zoo has to offer. From lush greenery and hidden corners to bold animal murals, there’s always something new to discover here.
What made their day even more special was the personal touches woven throughout. A close friend designed the wedding stationery, bringing a handcrafted, personal feel to their décor. They wanted plenty of time for portraits, so we dedicated part of the afternoon to exploring the zoo together – just the three of us – seeking out the best light and creative backdrops. By early evening, when the crowds had gone home, we had access to quieter spaces and the most beautiful golden light for portraits near The Oakfield. This balance meant their guests were never left waiting, and Abbie and Josh were able to enjoy both their celebration and their photography experience to the fullest.
As someone who has visited Chester Zoo for over 20 years – both as a member and with my own family – I know all the best spots for portraits and the little corners that many people miss. It felt extra special to bring that knowledge into Abbie and Josh’s day, helping them make the most of every moment at this unique Cheshire venue.
“I could not recommend Marie enough as a wedding photographer! It was an absolute pleasure walking around getting to know each other whilst getting the best shots. Marie put me at ease and boosted my confidence throughout the day. My husband hates being photographed and she made the experience unforgettable, we both enjoyed every moment. ”
Wedding Photography at Chester Zoo
As a Chester Zoo wedding photographer, I’m always inspired by the incredible variety of spaces this venue offers. From the characterful courtyard at The Square to the lush greenery and animal-inspired backdrops scattered around the grounds, Chester Zoo is full of opportunities for creative, natural photography.
For Abbie and Josh, it was important that their wedding photos felt relaxed and authentic, with plenty of time to simply enjoy each other’s company. We explored the zoo together in the afternoon, seeking out quiet spots for portraits, and I loved capturing those moments where they laughed, chatted, and forgot the camera was even there. Chester Zoo lends itself beautifully to this kind of approach — there’s always a corner of light, an architectural detail, or a bold mural (like the stunning butterfly wall) that makes for unforgettable editorial-style images.
One of the best things about Chester Zoo weddings is how the atmosphere changes throughout the day. In the early evening, once the crowds have gone home, the grounds take on a peaceful, almost magical quality. The golden light around The Oakfield is perfect for portraits, giving couples the chance to step away together before rejoining their guests for the evening celebrations. Abbie and Josh embraced this moment completely, and the results are some of my favourite images from their day.
Whether you’re dreaming of natural, candid photos of your guests enjoying the zoo, or striking portraits surrounded by greenery and conservation-inspired spaces, Chester Zoo is a wedding venue that truly delivers.
Planning Tips for a Chester Zoo Wedding
If you’re considering Chester Zoo as your wedding venue, here are a few tips to help you make the most of it:
1. Think about timing and light
Chester Zoo is open to the public during the day, which means the atmosphere changes as the hours pass. Once the zoo closes in the early evening, the grounds become beautifully quiet and peaceful — perfect for romantic portraits without the crowds. Golden hour around The Oakfield is especially stunning, so if you can, plan time for photos then.
2. Make use of the unique spaces
The Square’s outdoor courtyard is a hidden gem for ceremonies and drinks receptions. Not every couple chooses to use this space, but it creates such a relaxed and atmospheric setting. Abbie and Josh’s decision to host their drinks reception outdoors in the courtyard gave guests room to mingle and created some of the most joyful candid photos of the day.
3. Factor in travel time for portraits
Chester Zoo is vast, with so many photo opportunities. Give yourself plenty of time to explore with your photographer — whether that’s posing by the butterfly mural, wandering through leafy gardens, or finding quiet architectural corners. Abbie and Josh dedicated a part of their day to this, and it meant they could enjoy both the photography and the experience of being in the zoo together.
4. Showcase your personality in the details
The zoo is already a unique backdrop, so simple, thoughtful details go a long way. Abbie and Josh had a close friend design their stationery, adding a personal and creative touch that tied in beautifully with their relaxed styling.
5. Embrace the atmosphere
One of the best things about a wedding at Chester Zoo is that it feels different from any other Cheshire wedding venue. Guests love having the chance to explore during the day, and it makes for a fun, memorable experience for everyone.
